Columbus/Cleveland Thunderbolts Arena Football League (1991-1994)
The Thunderbolts were a team in the Arena Football League (AFL), an alternative to the NFL which emphasized a much faster, high-scoring game. AFL games were played on a much smaller field, players played both ways, wide receivers could get a running start before the snap, and kick-offs were bounced off large nets on the goalposts back into play. Derided by some as gimmicky, the AFL nevertheless gained many fans who loved its high-scoring shootouts and pinball like offenses. Originally located in Columbus, the Thunderbolts got off to a rough start, going 0-10 in their inaugural 1991 season. The team moved to Cleveland in 1992, but the club’s fortunes did not improve - the Thunderbolts never posted a winning season before folding in 1994.
