THE DETROIT DRIVE Arena Football League (1987 - 2009)
The Detroit Drive were an early franchise in the Arena Football league, joining in 1988 and playing home games at Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings (the Drive were owned by Mike Illitch, owner of the Red Wings).
The Drive were a league powerhouse in the early AFL, going to the league championship ArenaBowl six consecutive years and bringing home the title four of those years: 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1992.
Although wildly successful on the field and the most profitable AFL team at the time, owner Mike Illitch sold the team after his purchase of the MLB's Detroit Tigers in 1993. The team moved to Massachusetts and became the Marauders in 1994, but folded after only one season.
The Marauders were revived by Dan Devos and brought back to Michigan as the Grand Rapids Rampage in 1998 and continue to play to this day. The Arena Football League suffered a setback in 2009, cancelling its season, the AFL came back but the Detroit Drive sadly didn't.
